Last week, the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF), which was postponed for one year due to the impact of the new crown epidemic , was released on May 12. In REF 2021, the University of Essex has once again been widely recognized for its outstanding achievements in social science research, and at the same time, its research strengths in science, health, arts and humanities have been significantly improved.
REF is an action plan by the British government to evaluate the quality of scientific research in British universities and further fund it. It is published every 7 years and is jointly produced by four British higher education institutions: Research England (RE), Scottish Funding Council (SFC), Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and Northern Ireland Department of Economics (DfE).
A total of 157 UK universities were included in the REF 2021 assessment, subdivided into 34 subject areas. Each subject area will refer to three aspects: research quality (60%), research impact (25%) and research environment (15%). Based on the results of this REF, Times Higher Education has given two editions of the ranking in terms of research quality (GPA) and research strength.
